Purpose

Mantis Space is seeking an Electrical Lab Technician to design, commission, and maintain the advanced R&D infrastructure powering our aerospace innovations in directed energy, optics, and space systems. You’ll play a key role in transforming our Albuquerque facility into a world-class lab for prototyping and testing next-generation space and advanced energy technologies.

About Us

Mantis Space is a venture-backed aerospace company pioneering breakthrough technologies to build the first energy infrastructure in space! Headquartered in New Mexico — the cornerstone of U.S. defense R&D and central to the nation’s Space Valley — we’re building from the ground up to accelerate the next generation of satellite and orbital energy infrastructure.

Our veteran-led team brings decades of leadership in space, defense, and advanced R&D, with experience at Google, Meta, AeroVironment/BlueHalo, Terran Orbital, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the Space Telescope Science Institute, and Apple. With deep technical expertise in optics, photonics, and space systems, we are designing and delivering the infrastructure to power the future of orbital energy and advanced aerospace operations. Backed by Montauk Capital, we combine the agility of a start-up with the precision and reliability of decades in national security, research, and commercial innovation.

Why Join Us:

  • Build from the ground up: Directly shape our Albuquerque lab and R&D test environment.
  • Make an impact: Your systems will enable critical research in optics, lasers, and energy systems for space.
  • Grow with us: Work alongside leading engineers, operators, and investors in a mission-driven environment.
  • Competitive pay, full benefits, and equity in a company shaping the future of energy and space.

About The Role

The Opportunity:

We’re looking for a hands-on Electrical Lab Technician to support development and testing of optical and high-power laser systems. You’ll build and debug electrical fixtures, instrument experiments, maintain safe lab operations, and partner with engineers across electrical, mechanical, and optical disciplines.

What You’ll Do:

Build & Assembly

  • Fabricate test fixtures and wiring harnesses; assemble racks/enclosures and box-builds to prints/schematics
  • Perform PCB rework (through-hole/SMT) and final integration to meet fit/form/function
  • Ensure proper cable routing, strain-relief, labeling, and ESD-safe handling during builds

Test, Measurement & Automation

  • Set up benchtop instruments (oscilloscopes, DMMs, SMUs, power supplies, spectrum/network analyzers)
  • Execute structured test procedures; capture, label, and organize data
  • Configure DAQ systems and write simple LabVIEW/Python scripts to automate measurements and logging

Optics, Lasers & Power Systems

  • Integrate photodiodes, TEC/current drivers, interlocks, shutters, and safety circuits
  • Assist with basic optical alignment and beam diagnostics under supervision
  • Safely handle and test DC power, laser-diode drivers, and HV supplies using PPE, LOTO, and discharge procedures

Quality, Documentation & Lab Operations

  • Maintain BOMs, test records, calibration logs, and ESD/compliance checklists
  • Write clear, reproducible build notes and configuration histories
  • Calibrate/care for instruments; manage spares/inventory; keep the lab organized and audit-ready

What you Bring:

  • AS in Electrical Engineering Technology (or equivalent experience)
  • 2+ years in an R&D or production test lab supporting electronics, optics, or lasers
  • Strong bench skills: soldering/rework, crimping/termination, cable harnessing, routing, and strain-relief
  • Able to read schematics, wiring diagrams, and datasheets; follow test procedures with precision
  • Comfortable with optical sensors (photodiodes, PMTs), TECs/temperature controllers, laser diode drivers, and interlock chains
  • Proficient with oscilloscopes, DMMs, function generators, electronic loads, and power supplies
  • Experience with photodiodes/PMTs, TEC controllers, laser diode drivers, interlock chains
  • Beam diagnostics (power/energy meters, profilers), motion control, vacuum systems
  • IPC-A-610/620 or J-STD-001 certification; basic panel/fixture CAD; LabVIEW/Python automation
  • Clearance: Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance

The Hiring Process:

We aim to move quickly and efficiently, with most candidates completing the process in under two weeks.
