Technical skills may get you in the door, but what helps you grow once you’re there? This week’s STEM Boomerang Monday Survey asked which skill matters most for career growth in the STEM workforce.
Among nine respondents, problem-solving was the clear favorite at 56%, followed by leadership at 22%. Technical expertise and communication each received 11% of the vote.

Problem-solving is an interesting favorite because it’s where so many other skills come together. Technical expertise gives you the tools, but figuring out what to do when the answer isn’t obvious takes something more. Maybe that’s why problem-solving stood out. In STEM careers, knowing the right answer is useful, but knowing how to find one can be even more valuable.
